Ho-hum? Powerball hits $478 million

Published Friday July 29

Half a billion dollars ain’t what it used to be.

Sure, you could buy a few mega mansions in Tiburon, a summer home on the Amalfi Coast and set up your own Super PAC, but Bay Area residents are curiously batting their eyes and yawning at Sat night’s $478 mill. Powerball jackpot.

There are no lines of dreamers, no harried convenience store clerks struggling to keep up with ticket sales. Nontheless, despite the pretty penny — the 8th largest lottery jackpot in America history — pretty much all there is at local lottery outlets this week are “ho-hums.”

Blame January’s world-record $1.586 billion Powerball drawing for what lottery officials are calling “jackpot fatigue.”
